Unfortunately you cannot go straight to vet school, you can go straight to vet TECH school, but not vet school. You must first complete prerequisite requirements which can be done at any 4 year university. These include such things as your basic biology and chemistry along with microbiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, ect. It typically takes at least 3 years to complete these and most vet school applicants go the full 4 years to graduate with a bachelor's degree. You can be accepted to vet school without a bachelor's degree, but it is not common. The safest and best bet is to get your bachelor's and make good grades because vet school is very competitive. There are only 28 vet schools in the U.S. so the acceptance rate is very low. Once you get into vet school, it's another 4 years. So 7-8 years total. It's a lot of hard work, but it's worth it! As for schools near New Jersey, Univ. of Penn is probably the closest. Cornell, Tufts, and Virginia-Maryland would probably be the next closest ones. This website will list all of the schools in the U.S. and you can also read in more detail about applying to vet school. http://www.aavmc.org/ Hope this helps! Good luck!
